Meet the Folk Orchestra!
A Chicago native, Geeta began violin studies at the age of six after two years of piano studies. Geeta was a student of Stephanie Preucil and was active in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2006, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in violin performance at The Boston Conservatory under the tutelage of Magdalena Richter. An active musician in the Boston area’s freelance scene, her musical activities ranged from playing in rock bands to the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and various other ensembles through out the New England area. Geeta was a member of The Ludovico Ensemble, The Boston Conservatory’s student created/managed contemporary ensemble.
Shortly after completing her Bachelor’s degree, she began a Master’s degree program in October 2006 at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany with an emphasis on chamber music and historical performance under the tutelage of Ulrike-Anima Mathé and Kjell Jørgensen. In addition to studio recitals and chamber music performances, Geeta toured France with the Detmold Baroque Academy, performed baroque operas with the Detmold opera department in Potsdam, Germany, collaborated as soloist with the percussion department for performances of Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Violin and Percussion Ensemble, and performed sonatas by Buxtehude in the cities of Münster and Detmold. She also toured China with Ensemble Vinorosso, a Balkan music ensemble with whom she still regularly performs, played baroque violin in Ensemble Sarabande, a period-instrument historical performance group, and participated in the “Zeit für Neue Musik” concert series in Bayreuth. After completing her studies in February 2009, Geeta was selected as a member of the Orchestral Academy of the Essen Philharmonic, where she worked and received lessons as a member of the first violin section for one full season under the direction of Stefan Soltesz.
Geeta is now a tenured member of the second violin section of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Augsburg. She continues to work with various ensembles and orchestras, including Orchester m18 (formerly the New Chamber Orchestra of Bamberg), Freies Landestheater Bayern, and the Ulm Theater Orchestra, and maintains a private teaching studio.
A believer in the importance of a diverse approach to music, Geeta has also studied classical voice, theremin, and Indian harmonium. She worked as a musical ambassador to Mexico with the organization Cultures in Harmony Mexico in 2008, where she taught and performed for two weeks in Mexico City and in the state of Michoacán. In 2010, Geeta was invited to participate as a guest teacher in the Winter Academy of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) in Kabul, Afghanistan. She spent 2012-2013 in Chicago on an artistic sabbatical, playing with bands and ensembles in diverse venues around Chicago, and also as a substitute of the Peoria Symphony, Northwest Indiana Symphony, South Bend Symphony, North Shore Chamber Orchestra, and Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra.
